Did you know... on the road

There are lots of motorbikes on the roads - cheaper on gas which is VERY expensive in Uganda!

You drive on the left side of the road in Uganda.

Many roads are dirt roads - or MUD roads during rainy season!

Did you know... bed nets

Malaria is a disease that is carried by mosquitoes and can make people very sick. There is a lot of malaria in Northern Uganda! To protect ourselves against mosquitoes, we will sleep under a bed-net like this one that Mr. Josh slept under when he visited Gulu last. We will also take medicine every day to keep from getting malaria but might still get it anyway!

Did you know... how to greet the opposite gender

"Appropriate greetings depend on the nature of the relationship and region. A handshake is usually appropriate but it is best to wait for the woman to extend her hand, otherwise a bow or a nod of acknowledgment will suffice."

Always shake with your right hand! (This is especially important in Muslim cultures)

Did you know... how to greet a woman

Women will greet each other with a handshake and/or nod of acknowledgment. To show great respect you may also place your left hand over your right elbow/forearm when handshaking. Many times women will hold hands with other women as a sign of friendship.

Did you know... how to greet a man

When a man is greeting another man, they will often give each other a long hand shake. Sometimes they will hold their own hand-shaking forearm with the other hand to show extra respect to the man that is being greeted. Sometimes men will hold hands while talking or walking together. This is simply a way to show friendship. But holding hands can be uncomfortable for American men!
